Tree Builder

Making complex business workflows easier to understand, build, and manage

At Kinetic Data, I helped design Tree Builder, a visual tool for creating and managing enterprise workflows. These workflows combine approvals, routing rules, loops, tasks, status changes, and completion steps into a single process. Our challenge was to make that complexity approachable while preserving the control experienced users needed.

The challenge

As workflows grow, their logic becomes difficult to follow. Users need to quickly understand where a process begins, how decisions affect its path, what happens after an approval or rejection, and where each branch ends.

My role

I led the product and interaction design work, including workflow visualization, reusable interface patterns, and close collaboration with engineering.

Design approach

We used a node-and-connector model to make each workflow easier to scan. Visual markers distinguished node types, connector labels clarified decision points, and an integrated legend helped users learn the system. Search and zoom controls made larger workflows easier to navigate and inspect.

Outcome

Tree Builder transformed abstract automation logic into a shared visual system that users could understand, discuss, and edit with greater confidence.

Skills demonstrated

Complex systems design, enterprise SaaS, information architecture, interaction design, workflow visualization, and reusable UI patterns.
